THE CORNER - first modular building in detroit, michigan
How often do you have a chance to work on something as nostalgic as a historical landmark? The old Detroit Tigers stadium site has been broken into four different sites. I was lucky enough to work on this beautiful apartment building on the corner of Michigan and Trumbull, with a client who really appreciated what he had. Eric Larson wanted this to be a landmark building on a landmark site.
Time is money and the timing of this project played a crucial part in it’s design. This was the first project in Detroit to utilize modular units for apartments. While the apartments were being built off site, the podium and ground level retail spaces were being constructed on site. As soon as the concrete podium was structurally ready, the modular apartments were delivered and stacked on site. It only took eight days to stack the modular units and another 6 months to finish the exterior finishes. This building required a high level of coordination and a very accurate BIM model to help pull it all together.
